The Daze of My Life

This category is basically just my rants and raves of life in general, as well as guff about the site and anything else that doesn’t really fit anywhere else.

How time flies…

 September 2, 2009

Gee, how time flies when you’re having, um, fun? Yeah, not too sure about that, but I’m surprised to realise it’s been over 18 months since I’ve posted anything here. Indeed, it’s been about that long since I did anything online that wasn’t related to work.
While I was working down in St George for the Balonne Beacon back in January 2008, I was offered a job as the journalist for the Western Times in Charleville. At the same time, I got offers from the Dalby Herald, the Toowoomba Chronicle and the Bundaberg NewsMail.

Out at St George

 January 22, 2008

Hmm, ok, so it’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to post anything. I got kinda carried away with house renovations - almost done, just a bit of painting and some yard work.

As for site redesign - still on the cards - dunno.

What really has been taking up my time though is work - just before Christmas, I got a call from the South Burnett Times - a newspaper in Kingaroy. They also run the Kingaroy Mail, Central & North Burnett Times, Western Times and Balonne Beacon. Their journalist out at St George was going on holidays and they needed someone to fill in for her - I got the job.

Are we there yet?

 October 28, 2007

At last, I have finished my degree in communications. But wait! There’s more. I’ve been fairly seriously applying for jobs all year with little joy. I’m beginning to think the only place that appreciates my efforts is academia. I’ll see how things go over the next few months, but I am contemplating further study - I know - insane. But hey, at least if I’m studying, I’m achieving something. Better than sitting on the dole.

Anyway, expect changes to the website. When I’m not looking for work or continuing with the never-ending house renovations, I’ll be playing with the site design.

There is hope…

 August 29, 2007

Living near a bend on a minor (and poorly maintained) rural highway has its problems. In the five/six years I’ve been here, we’ve had just as many cars end up in our front yard. It’s not nice pulling kids out of cars wrapped around trees. A couple of months ago, we were watching TV - it was about 8pm - and we hear this guy calling out near the front verandah. This time it wasn’t an accident.

Life without a telephone

 May 6, 2007

Ah, the joy, the peace, the solitude - I no longer have a telephone. A few months back, I got a letter from my service (humph) provider, Optus. They were going to increase the cost of line rental by about ten dollars - as it was, the cost of line rental made up 75% of my total monthly phone bill. If they had a ‘rent-buy’ scheme, I reckon I’ve probably ‘bought’ most of the line all the way from here to Ipswich. Indeed, if I owned the phone line, I’d replace it - it simply doesn’t work. Fine, I thought, keep your bloody phone line - I’m not renting it anymore.
